Dave McConnell and Stephen Whiteman of Scenery recently sat down with me to talk about the band’s exponential growth over the last 12 months and where the next year can take the band.
If you haven't read the profile or listened to the interview, do so. For all of you that have, we’ve a special treat in the form of a short live session the two recorded whilst in the studio this week.
The first was a cover of legendary Sam Cooke’s A Change is Gonna Come. This take (of only two) blew me away on the day, unrehearsed and put on the spot, the two were as tight as I had seen them. You can really hear the power and strength of Stephen’s voice and being used to the full sound of a kit, bass, guitar and sax, his impressive vocals can sometimes get lost amongst the full sound of the band on stage.
The stripped down acoustic set of these recordings are a leap away from the sound of the full band, but it is not unfamiliar territory for Dave and Stephen. Recently recording for Irish television in the Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin venue in the city with a similar set up. For their original however, the boys picked a song fresh in creation. Not included in the 5 track EP soon to be released, Baby I’m Blue is planned for their second release, we can exclusively include the recording.
Soft and slow to begin, both Stephen’s vocals and Dave’s Django Reinhardt style guitar melody build to full force. The track is planned to be recorded similarly with a stripped down back backline and an intimate vibe.
